Divinity is the Field of Obligation and Obedience

Formulation of the claim

Shahrur makes divinity the sphere in which human beings are asked to submit, bear obligation, and comply.

Explanation

Divinity, in his view, is associated with laws, revelations, and commands. It is therefore the sphere in which the human being is asked: does one obey or not? This is, for him, the locus of true religious practice. By contrast, lordship is not a sphere of optional obligation, because it is established in the origin of creation.

Its place in the episode’s argument

This atom completes the episode’s binary: a fixed lordship and an obligatory divinity. Through it, he links monotheism, action, and revelation.

Limits of the claim

It does not reduce religion to commands alone, but it does define the locus of human responsibility.
