Shahrur sees the crisis of the Arab mind as connected to inherited cognitive tools that disable the production of knowledge, foremost among them synonymy, analogy, and preoccupation with the permitted and the forbidden. For him, then, the obstacle is methodological before it is a partial epistemic one.
