In this book, Abraham’s role in the story of the Sacred House is reinterpreted: he did not build it, but came to purify it, after it had already existed before him. Under this reading, his role becomes reformative rather than foundational, which supports Shahrur’s reading of Qur’anic language and the history of ritual practices.
