The Qur’an presents a cumulative development of humanity, bringing together the earlier Qur’anic narratives within a single framework that reads the Qur’anic story as a cognitive construction of the stages of human and social formation. Within this framework, the Garden in the story of Adam is earthly places the beginning in the human world, and repentance corrects human freedom shows how human action is repaired after deviation, while the story of the two sons of Adam builds the human conscience represents a later step in the formation of moral awareness. And the tree as a symbol of the test of possession makes clear that the first tests were connected to the limits of ownership and appropriation.
